Customer Service- Wendy’s

When you go to a restaurant you expect a certain level of service. Usually this level of service is dictated by how much the total cost of the meal. When you think Olive Garden, the words that come to mind are Italian, pasta and good service. (Not forgetting to mention soup, salad and bread sticks.) They average about $15-20 per meal after drinks and other items, so not too expensive.

Going to Wendy’s, the words that come to mind are old fashioned hamburgers, Dave Thomas, quick food and now some weird guy with red pony tails. I loved going there as a kid and remember when you left your tray on the table and they cleaned up for you. Also the salad bar was a big item. Times do change, now you bus your own tray and salads are now individual containers. I understand all of this because it is cost efficient and they want to stay in business.

What my issue is… when companies or individuals in companies forget about what Customer Service is or better yet, don’t care! Here’s my real life example: I had lunch in Charleston, SC yesterday at a Wendy’s not far from The Citadel. I ordered a chicken sandwich and large* sized the combo replacing chili for fries (part of my trying to eat better). I asked specifically for a large chili, on my tray I got a small chili. I asked about it and the assistant manager that was filling the order just shrugged her shoulders like she didn’t care.

No sorry we misunderstood or anything else. Simply “I Don’t Care,” is what she said non-verbally. I don’t expect linen table clothes, candles or even sirloin steak. Just care about what you’re doing!

Learning Point: Good Customer Service-

  1. At least fake that you care
  2. Attempt to make it right
  3. Look at this site for more points: http://sbinfocanada.about.com/od/customerservice/a/custservrules.htm

Product Life Cycle- Overview

Every product has a life cycle. And every product class has a life cycle. The life cycle is generally broken down into four parts. A graphical representation of the Product Life Cycle is shown below:

Product Life Cycle

The four stages are defined as: (From a business to consumer B2C point of view.) (Added links for further explanation of each stage.)

  • Introduction– Here the company tries to educate the consumer about how the product works, why its needed and work on distribution of the product.
  • Growth– Now that consumers know more about the product, companies try to build brand loyalty and increase their market share.
  • Maturity– Sales begins to slow and competitors appear to have the same or similar product. Companies are trying to defend market share.
  • Decline– A product may become obsolete, need to be revamped or just continues to make sales. Some products do not face being obsolete.

The picture shows one way a product life cycle may evolve. Sometimes it may cycle back and forth between maturity and growth due to innovations of ideas. Where is Your product on this curve? Just because it is in the Introduction or Decline stage, doesn’t mean you should or shouldn’t be marketing the product.

In future posts I will talk about each stage in more detail.

Know the Life Cycle,

Blog Now or Blog Later?

That is the question, Dear Shakespeare. Whether ’tis nobler to write the post now or would it be better to do it later. The slings and arrows of other commitments, like spending time with family.

It case the above is unfamiliar to you, its a very paraphrased quote from Hamlet. Here’s the question in plain English:
Should I write this post and then put it on the web while I have time,
Or fear that I will not have time to do it?

To let you know I am writing this post on Sunday (a little while before the Super Bowl) and it will appear on the site Monday morning. Why would I do this? There are a multitude of reasons:

  • The search engines like content regularly.
  • I don’t want to be writing this while I should be working.
  • What if I was on vacation for a week and want to keep giving out gems of info. Do I cry and complain until I get to a cyber cafe? No!
  • I’m sometimes not in the mood to write.
  • Making money on the web is supposed to being freeing, I’m not creating another job. I make this on my schedule and post it when I want.
  • It saves time to batch activities.
  • There’s more, but that’s enough for now…

So how do I do this trick? Continue reading

On a Rainy Friday Morning

I’m drawing a blank on this miserable rainy Friday. I have to remember every day isn’t fresh red roses. And we need the rain after having had water restrictions.

Hard day for you? Watch the video below, it may help. It gives you a little preview on a great movie I saw a few weeks ago- Amazing Grace.
